The Garmin D2 Bravo Titanium smartwatch crams all the aviation related functionality you could imagine on your wrist, as well as a host of additional features – and it even tells the time.
Garmin has set the standard in feature-packed sports watches, and they have now combined all those multisport features with impressive aviation functionality. The D2 Bravo Titanium has a worldwide airport database, displays METARs and TAFs, can create flight plans, and has both an altimeter with adjustable barometric setting and a compass with an HSI. And with its moving map, functions like a portable Garmin aviation GPS.
It provides a pre-set oxygen reminder based on barometric altitude when operating at or above 12,500 ft, as well as pilot-selectable altitude alerting, which notifies pilots when they reach or leave a preselected altitude. Supplementary vibrating alerts can be set to remind you, for example, to switch fuel tanks.
In addition to its cockpit functionality, the D2 Bravo Titanium contains multisport functions for golf, rowing, swimming, hiking, skiing, cycling and running. It counts steps and monitors distance walked and calories burned, and in sleep mode even monitors your quality of rest. Users can also monitor heart rate and activity levels without needing to strap on a separate heart rate monitor.
As is to be expected, the watch is bulky, but it’s stylish enough to be worn as a day to day watch, and is durable. The band is made from Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) hybrid titanium and the lens from scratch-resistant sapphire. It’s water-rated to 100 metres, and the face features a sunlight-readable colour display with an LED backlight, so you can view data in most lighting environments.
Battery life is up to 16 hours in GPS mode, and two weeks in smartwatch mode with 24/7 heart-rate monitoring.
The Garmin D2 Bravo Titanium is available from Dart Aeronautical for a reasonable R11,700.00, considering all the features, and the D2 Bravo Standard is available for R8,000.00. However, pricing is subject to change due to freight and Rand-Dollar fluctuations.
